Kolkata: For the first time in 65 years, Kolkata witnessed a full-fledged Independence Day pageant, with a police parade and tableaux.

Thanks to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who reportedly transformed the Independence Day celebrations involving general public including social organisations, civil society members and school children.

According to reports, breaking the 64-year-old tradition, Mamata changed the venue of Independence Day celebrations from the government headquarters  ‘Writers' Building’ in BBD Bag to Red Road in the heart of the city.

For the first time city and state police, social organizations, civil society members, and school children, participated in Parade as compared to no public participation earlier, reports said

Unlike previous years, when flag hoisting was just attended by ministers, top bureaucrats and their staff, this year's celebrations involved more public participation.
