Chennai: Thirty Sri Lankan Tamil girls were rescued by police at Vandalur when they were being taken by a gang involved in human trafficking to Mamallapuram on Thursday to be transported to an island near Australia.

The police initial investigation says that they were to board a ferry to Christmas Island where they would be put up before moving to Australia.

This is second incident in a week. Earlier, police arrested five people involved in human trafficking and rescued 23 Sri Lankan Tamils who were then sent to refugee camps.
