Candy packets to carry health warnings

Candy packets to carry health warnings

London: Like danger signs on cigarette packets, candy and lollipops in Britain would now also need to carry health warnings.

The warnings are related to artificial food colouring, The Sun reported.

One warning says: "May have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children."
The colour additives in candy often include tartrazine-E102 and cochineal red-E122.

A recent study by the University of Southampton showed children were likely to display hyperactive behaviour if they had candy with one of the two colourings.

The children were more likely to behave badly, their attention span was reduced and they were less likely to concentrate.

In 2008, the European Parliament had told companies to warn of risks associated with the colourings.
