Alcohol may increase breast cancer risk

Alcohol may increase breast cancer risk

If you (read: female) are a social butterfly and often spend your time in parties and cocktails with a glass of wine, then you are at a greater risk of breast cancer. According to a new study, sipping three alcoholic beverages per week may lead to modest increases in breast cancer risk.
Researchers found that consumption of three to six glasses of wine per week was linked with a 15 percent increased risk of breast cancer.
Also, the women are at an increasing risk of 10 percent with each 10 grams of alcohol consumed per day.
According to Huffington Post, "When looking at lower levels of alcohol consumption, it's not what women did this week or last month -- we were looking at a longer period of time," said Dr. Wendy Chen, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and one of the study's authors.
"If someone's on vacation and they have a glass of wine every day, that's one thing," she added. "You have to look at what the average is over the period of time. There's not a particular time point at which someone is at particular risk."
However, researches have suggested that moderate consumption of alcohol may help promote heart health, particularly with regard to red wine. But, women should take into consideration their health history.
"What I generally tell women is to keep alcohol consumption at a few servings per week," she said.
